Sau 3 quyển "De Père Inconnu", "Cha Vô Danh" và "Unknown Father", nhà xuất bản L'Harmattan ở Paris mới xuất bản và phát hành "Partir vers son destin", quyển sách tôi viết về cuộc đời của cha tôi, dựa trên những thư từ ông trao đổi với gia đình và bạn bè (viết trong thập niên 1930 và 40) mà nay tôi có trong tay. Cũng là một bức tranh về Việt Nam thời thuộc địa.

Reading the first chapter which begins with a letter from Jean Caillard (who will be the author's father) in Saigon to his father in Noumea (Nouvelle Caledonie), my first impression is that this is a "prequel" to "Unknown Father: A Vietnamese Eurasian Life Spanning Colonialism, Independence and Communism" by the same author. However, there is some difference in style: the writer now is more of a historian than a participant, analyzing primary historical documents which are letters spanning almost a century from different members of a well-off French family who moved around a lot (by the early 20th century standards) and who also wrote a lot to each other in excellent French, as proof of the now largely lost epistolary art.

If the reader takes time to look up maps and references, it will enlarge his horizon with details about life in Saigon between the two World Wars, the repatriation of Vietnamese soldiers originally sent to France to fight the Germans, life of university students in France, cultural differences between North and South Vietnam, etc...

A few maps, a lexicon, and timeline tables would have helped readers unfamiliar with the French colonial empire and early 20th-century French terminology.

In summary, an exceptional contribution to Vietnamese and French history, also a prequel, and to some extent a sequel of "Unknown Father".

Phạm Ngọc Lân sinh năm 1944 tại Sài Gòn. Tốt nghiệp Đại học Dược khoa và Đại học Khoa học Sài Gòn (Cử nhân giáo khoa Vật lý). Dược sĩ Đại Úy trong Quân Lực Việt Nam Cộng Hòa. Giảng nghiệm viên Đại Học Dược Khoa và Giáo sư Lý Hóa trường Marie Curie. Năm 1975 bị tù « cải tạo » một thời gian ngắn, trở về Sài Gòn tiếp tục giảng dạy tại Đại học Y Nha Dược. Năm 1980 qua Pháp định cư cùng vợ và hai con. Học ngành Tin học (và hành nghề kỹ sư tin học) và ngành Sử (bằng Cao học Sử) ở Đại học Paris. Hiện đã nghỉ hưu, sống gần thành phố Toulouse miền nam nước Pháp.
