WHERE DO THOSE EYES RETURN ?
I bid farewell to the East
on a night of October with ominous clouds.
Putting away the past days of youth,
wrapping up personal sorrows, I hastily setting off.
You come from the South sky.
Passing temporarily through days adrift in flood and rain.
Not yet washed away the melancholy after a sea journey.
The dark dawn remains at the end of the horizon.
In your eyes, a glimpse of hope,
but still bewildered by a dying dream.
We meet here by chance
on a furtive night flight.
Leaving behind homeland, you with a heavy heart.
And I... an autumn night,
taking refuge in my own sorrow.
Parting with the Land of the Rising Sun from the East.
Thought it would be a peaceful realm!
Hesitantly, I understand the life of an exile.
Your eyes, looking at me, are misty...
A fleeting appearance of melancholy, oh so distant.
Memories of injustice suddenly return in the dark night.
The sky silent with forlorn stars.
Your eyes convey, mingled with murmurs.
Deeply but silently, yet I understand.
From tomorrow onward, my dear:
We will no longer live in our homeland.
We are Vietnamese exiles.
Until when will our homeland no longer remains so misty and
distant?
I know tomorrow we will part ways.
To the place with white snow after many days.
Wherever it is, it’s still the same place.
There’s a river where white clouds fly.
